The New Recruitment Rules

Posted by Kate Smedley on 12 Sep 2017

Recruitment is changing. Gone are the traditional methods of posting jobs and waiting for talent to apply.

These are the new rules:-

Your employee voice matters : What your employees say about you online directly impacts the success of your talent acquisition strategy. The effect of Glassdoor’s ‘recommend to a friend’ rating was apparent in its newly published '20 Most Recommended Tech Employers[1] in the UK, based exclusively on employee feedback. Likewise, all of the companies in its Best Places To Work survey were chosen by employees. Creating an effective employee experience must be a priority for your future recruitment success.

No hire is better than a bad hire : The ‘scramble’ to fill predicted post-Brexit skills gaps is all too frequently accompanied by a simultaneous rise in poor hiring decisions. A rushed hiring process based on intuition and a race to recruit ‘anyone’ has potentially serious consequences for your business and your ability to attract talent. Support your hiring process with recruitment software that automates key processes, identifies problematic areas and frees up HR’s time to focus on engaging with and evaluating qualified candidates.

Flexible working shouldn't be optional : The call for more flexible working options isn’t new but employee expectations are changing and may force HR to change with them. Flexible or remote working is becoming an increasing priority for today’s candidates. It is also the ‘most desirable benefit’ for millennials according to a new survey from Sodexho Engage[2]. The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) also recently recommended that all jobs should be advertised as available for flexible working. How flexible is your business?

The informal approach to hiring has to go : An ambivalent approach to background screening has potentially significant consequences for your business. With the introduction of the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) due in May 2018, screening must become more structured and formalised to potentially avoid breaking the law. Background checks should be more than a nod to compliance. Support your hiring process with HR technology that automates mandatory checks on your candidates and minimises discrimination with effective pre-hire assessments.

A job offer acceptance doesn’t guarantee a hire : The practice of job hoarding - candidates accepting your job offer while continuing to explore other opportunities – shows no signs of abating. Up to two thirds of candidates are potential job hoarders. Your entire candidate experience must be efficient, consistent, deliver on expectations and reflect what you claim is your employer brand. Delays in hiring decisions, poorly structured interviews and a lack of contact during onboarding increase the chances of a reneged acceptance of your job offer. Your recruitment data will indicate the success of your job offer to acceptance ratio.

Seasonal recruitment lulls are a thing of the past : Gone are the days when recruitment professionals enjoyed a seasonal ‘quiet time’ in hiring. REC's latest Jobs Outlook shows that the growth in demand for staff rose at its highest in 28 months during the traditionally slow month of August[3], while candidate availability continued its downward trend. The sharpest rise in new jobs was seen in tech and computing. To compete in today’s jobs market, your business should always be hiring.

The time for AI is now : Hiring decisions must be supported by your recruitment data to minimise bias and improve staff retention but employers are failing to prepare their working environment for the impact of AI. Automation in the working environment is predicted to ‘increase productivity and boost wages’ and is regarded by PwC as the biggest commercial opportunity in today’s economy. Tap into that opportunity by preparing your workforce for the impact of AI today, starting with your recruitment process.
