I am fairly new to this large, diverse and highly experienced blogging community. To join such a world was, I admit, terrifyingly daunting. I had never done a blog before and though I had read a few on occasion, I never thought my casual thoughts or opinions would end up being published on a page.
Not only did I start blogging a few short months ago but I also joined Twitter. In my head, Twitter was something that was quoted in the Metro a lot and a tool to follow what Stephen Fry said. Even from my first day, I realised this was not the case. With words flying around like ‘hashtag’ and things on my TweetDeck ‘trending’ left, right and centre to say I was confused may be a slight understatement. Perhaps if Sara Headworth had written her Twitter guide post earlier, I would have found it a lot easier! But needless to say, a quick two minute chat with my friend who loves Twitter seemed to just convey his love for it, rather than an actual guide.
I was given a few names from my manager to follow-people who were in the recruitment industry, people who were prolific bloggers etc. I can’t explain how excited I was when the first person followed me, even though I think it was ‘CheapCarInsurance’ but I’m sure all of you remember that feeling, albeit many moons or rather ‘tweets’ ago!
From reading various blogs, I realised I had a rather large task ahead of me-to write something that people would want to read and would even perhaps spark comments. Thankfully, I realised whilst writing my first blog, that trying to write in a certain style to appeal to people would never work-I had to write in my own style and hope that people would not mind my random thoughts too much. From then on, blog writing became that part of my day where I was still doing ‘work’ but it felt much more relaxing! I do have to note here, that being accepted by the British Business Bloggers and being published alongside much more experienced bloggers than I, was definitely one of the highlights of my short blogging life!
As yet, I have been a bit nervous at commenting on people’s blogs or replying to tweets purely from worry that someone will think ‘who on earth is this?!’ but I have found that Twitter is really just a big community, full of people who like to help each other out and support each other. I have to thank Alex Charraudeau for being one of the first people on Twitter that I have spoken to and for also being my first blog post retweeter!
I endeavour, as from today, to try and comment, retweet and generally be a bit chattier both on Twitter and on blog posts – see you there!!
