I've had a read through the plethora of recruiting-related predictions for 2009.
Most of it is predictable and related to the economy, but some isn't.
Here's my five-second summary:
- Less hiring
- More contractors and freelancers
- There will be job board price wars
- The use of social media will increase
The best quote was from Laurie Ruettimann of Punk Rock HR. "I predict job descriptions will become 140-characters and go out, Twitter-style, directly from companies to job seekers. Buh, bye, Monster and CareerBuilder."

‘job descriptions will become 140-characters’ – I like it!!!!
Things are changing in the online recruitment. Twitters of the world are here. LinkedIN is here and everyone is on it. Job boards are still filling far more jobs than LikedIN’s. This is why recruiters will still continue to pay for them. How much will they pay? That is another question.
I think Monster made a huge mistake not to include some form of social networking on the site when they re-launched this month. And it will cost them. But they will still be a major player at the end of 2009. Many times before have we said that the era of the job boards is over. Check the advertising spend of a recruiter and it reveals you the true story.
